Behind the Vines: Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley

Nestled in one of Yountville’s most historic places, Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley offers a truly one-of-kind experience in wine country. It’s a mecca of culture, filled with highly edited furnishings and artwork. The collections of art on display include Napa Valley favorites, Bay Area’s most esteemed painters, as well as notable artists worldwide—all of which are available for purchase.

“From a wine perspective, these art pieces create a wonderful pairing for an inspiring wine experience.” – Brian Ball, Wine Director

They search for artists who exude luster and innovation to complement their wine. Recently, Mai(s)onry started showcasing Heidi Barrett, the world famous winemaker and impressive painter. You can buy a bottle and a painting—now that’s a perfect pairing!

This experience doesn’t really compare anywhere else. It’s a “living gallery” atmosphere with a stylized backdrop to limited boutique wines—including Blackbird Vineyard’s portfolio of Pomerol-inspired blends. Back in 2008, it started out with Blackbird winery. Then they took this old, historic and majestic building in Yountville, creating and curating to Napa Valley producers and winemakers, and showcased wines next to one another. Mai(s)onry’s collection of wines represent the top AVAS in Napa Valley, only the most sublime and high-quality wines. When asked about which wine tactics or beliefs does Ma(i)sonry employ, we were told the most beautiful and lyrical response, “…it’s just what gets you up in the morning and… inspires.” We love sipping wine that is beautiful, wine that is art—especially the big, rich Napa Valley red wines that Ma(i)sonry only has in their current collection. That has us really excited right now.

In 2014, Ma(i)sonry became part of Restoration Hardware and they are continually looking to grow the Ma(i)sonry footprint in and outside of the Valley, developing fruitful and meaningful relationships. This year alone, they have added several new vintners to their collection, exposing wine sippers and lovers to new and wonderful wines. Their newest development is expanding their real estate to a building just next door. Ma(i)sonry is further developing their wine, art and design experience, which will be in full-swing by NVFF17.

“It’s spurring and exciting — the future ahead of us, as part of Restoration Hardware, the entire valley can get behind the upcoming development next-door, in heartbeat of the valley.” – Brian Ball, Wine Director

Ma(i)sonry loves being involved with NVFF because of the culture, wine and art. It really is a special time in the Valley, and a unique adventure to be part of. Their favorite memory is from our first year, Ma(i)sonry played host to a fantastic event, “Michael Keaton and Minnie Driver were there, so many film stars noshing on food and enjoying wine,” Brian Ball recalls. We’d have to agree that was a spectacular bash, and a wonderful memory to glance back on. This year, Ma(i)sonry is looking forward to the great films, hosting their Vintner Circle Dinners, and all of the parties, of course!

From painters, to an impressive collection of vintners, in a one-of-kind space, tucked in the heart of the Valley—Ma(i)sonry is such a wondrous place that shouldn’t be missed on your next visit to wine country. For more information on tastings and experiences check-out their website.

The wine industry: It’s part farming, part chemistry, part branding, and entirely art. Producing and selling wine is a process we think we know, but beyond the glass lies the real story of a winery and its winemakers.  The Napa Valley Film Festival team is proud to share the inspirational behind-the-vines stories we’ve had the pleasure of learning from our Vintner Circle members with you.
