Behind the Scenes: NVFF16 Culinary Stage

Napa’s historic riverfront and the Napa Mill buildings were used in the second half of the 1800s as a sea and river commerce center. Over 150 years of rich Napa Valley history later, the complex played host to our Culinary Stage, Napa Box Office, Napa Wine Pavilion, and more. This lively, walkable corner of Downtown Napa was the go-to location throughout the festival for experiencing curated afternoon winetastings, festival merchandise for sale, culinary demonstrations, film screenings at Silo’s, and the latest in technology from HP.

Wine: Does Age Matter? Tasting Terlato Wines with MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine
Spectator and Chimney Rock Winemaker Elizabeth Vianna

_mg_6682-1The majority of wines are crafted to taste delicious right upon release; but some can also benefit from time in a cellar. MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator, and Chimney Rock winemaker Elizabeth Vianna shared three vintages of Chimney Rock Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Stags Leap District. Guests tasted the difference between young and old wines and learned how both youth and age lend beautiful but different qualities to wine.

How to Taste Wine with John Terlato

Winery owner John Terlato lead a fun, interactive blind tasting of four exceptional wines. He shared insider tips on how a wine’s color, aroma, taste and texture can reveal its origin, varietal and more. Guests sharpened their wine tasting skills and had fun at the same time. As a bonus, and because food and wines are often enjoyed together, John shared one of his family’s favorite dishes from the Terlato Kitchen.


Sliders and Stella Artois with Kenmore Executive Chef Kari Karch_mg_7334

Executive Chef for the Kenmore brand, Kari Karch, made Japanese Karaage Biscuit sliders with yuzu marmalade and gochujang cucumber. To make matters more mouth-watering, this spicy, sweet, savory biscuit sandwich was paired with the rich flavor of Stella Artois.


Movie Food & Terlato Wine Pairings with MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator

Popcorn is a must for any movie watching experience; and like any food worth eating, it deserves a perfect wine pairing. MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator shared her expert ideas for wines that go great with popcorn, from classic buttered-and-salted to more exotic flavors. Guests tasted four wines with four flavors of freshly made popcorn by Awesome Pop and left feeling inspired their next movie experience!

Souping is the Next Juicing with Kenmore Executive Chef Kari Karch

A good soup is sure to hit the spot, but can be tough to master. Expert chef Kari Karch demonstrated how to make roasted cauliflower and parsnip soup with hazelnut gremolata and Meyer lemon oil. Needless to say, it was delicious!


Mixing it up with Charbay

Charbay Distillery presented a few of the their hand distilled signature cocktails for sampling. Owners Miles and Susan Karakasevic work side by side with son Marko and his wife Jenni to make some of finest spirits in the country, and NVFF passholders were be treated to this special tasting, as well as tips and tricks for making their own craft cocktails at home.

Blend Your Own Wine with Rutherford Hill Winemaker Marisa Taylor and MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator

_mg_7471Marisa Taylor, winemaker at Rutherford Hill Winery, and MaryAnn Worobiec of Wine Spectator guided guests through blending their own personal wine. While winemakers can start out with up to 100 different wines from various vineyards and vineyard blocks, we started with four. Guests learned how to combine different amounts of each to create their own personal wine that was balanced and delicious.

Vegan Brunch 101 with Kenmore Executive Chef Kari Karch

You didn’t need to be a vegan to drool over this dairy free tiramisu. Chef Kari Karch taught all of the tips and tricks necessary to turn this creamy, sweet, Italian staple 100% vegan.

Ceja Vineyards President Amelia Ceja prepared a refreshing and authentic ceviche right before our eyes. She shared secrets and samples that had us all nodding in amazement, we can’t wait to try it out on our own!

Variety’s 10 to Taste


Innovative, up-and-coming Bay Area chefs gathered on the second day of NVFF16 to showcase their fresh spin on dishes inspired by iconic film scenes. A distinguished panel of celebrity chefs, filmmakers, and actors sampled the dishes (along with all attending guests), and then discussed their personal favorites and gave their expert insights into the latest culinary trends and the role of food in film. In addition, the dishes where also paired with ten wines from Terlato Family Wineries.

Meet the panelists:


ROBERT LIANO | Director (Six Strings of Separation at #NVFF16)

Robert Liano has been creating content for screens of all sizes for over 20 _mg_6436-1years. He first learned storytelling on both live and taped productions including the NCAA Final Four, six Olympic Games and The Masters while earning production credits on HBO, ABC, NBC, CBS, and ESPN. He has collected two Emmy awards with three nominations.

Six Strings of Separation is his third independent documentary and his first short film. The project celebrates the legacy of the late Jerry Garcia through his iconic guitars while also chronicling luthier Tom Lieber’s creation of hand built instruments to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead.

In 2006 Liano created, produced and directed the feature film “A Broad Way,” the first-ever massive collaborative documentary about New York City. Over 400 filmmakers took part in simultaneously documenting each of the 221 Manhattan blocks that make up the avenue Broadway. The film won Best Documentary at the ACE Film Festival in 2007.

In 1999, he crossed the country producing and directing the feature documentary film, “Barberland”. This story of the vanishing American barber premiered at the American Rolling Rivers Film Festival in 2000.

He makes his home in the New York area where he is an aspiring cook, a struggling guitar player and a playmate for his two-year old son and his six-year-old golden doodle.

I love to cook.  A few years back I produced a reality show that nearly destroyed me from the inside out. After which my wife insisted I take a break and regroup.  That same week I got called to direct a commercial for the French Culinary Institute in NYC.  I ended up taking their 6-month culinary arts program during the day and worked in a handful of restaurants in the city in the evening.  The whole experience changed my life in amazing ways.  So luckily for myself and my family –  food and cooking is my meditation!”

PAOLO LUCCHESI | San Francisco Chronicle Food Critic_mg_6432-1-1

Paolo Lucchesi is the San Francisco Chronicle’s Inside Scoop columnist. He covers all breaking restaurant news in the Bay Area, from openings and closings to chef gossip and other food media. Before coming to The Chronicle food section, he served as the founding editor of Eater San Francisco, which launched in fall 2007, and later Eater National, which launched in fall 2009.

MADELINE ZIMA | Actress (I Am Watching You at #NVFF16)

Madeline Zima began her acting career at the age of seven and has developed into a seasoned and diverse actress. Equally skilled at comedy and drama, she has worked continuously for several decades, in critically-acclaimed projects.

She and her sister Vanessa were discovered by Woody Allen for his movie, Alice. She actually quit show business, the week when she was urged to come in for her sixth call back for The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. She came back for one more audition and booked the role of “Emma”. She booked the movie and has never stopped working since.._mg_6500-1

Madeline followed that dramatic thriller with a short film that Daryl Hannah directed. She followed that with the comedies, Mr. Nanny, Our Song, a pilot with George Hamilton, and finally The Nanny.

After a worldwide search in all English-speaking countries, Madeline was the choice to play Lucille Ball as a teenager, in the CBS mini-series, Lucy (aka “Redhead”). She followed that up playing the wicked stepsister of Hilary Duff in A Cinderella Story. Madeline took up sketch comedy-writing with hopes of one day being on SNL.

In a return to television, she agreed to play the mysterious and destructive character “Mia” on the hit Showtime series, Californication.

When not working on movies, Madeline sings and plays guitar, writes songs, screenplays. She loves to snowboard, paint, dance and spends lots of time with her sisters, who are also actresses and writers, Vanessa Zima and Yvonne Zima.

Chef Tyler Florence graduated from the prestigious culinary program at Johnson and Wales University,
and moved to New York where he honed his skills under the tutelage of premier chefs like Charlie Palmer, Marta Pulini and Rick Laakonen, ultimately becoming executive chef at Cafeteria. Tyler is a veteran star of the Food Network.  He has starred in such series as 
How to Boil Water, Food 911 and Tyler’s Ultimate, as well as The Great Food Truck Race, Worst Cooks in America and the upcoming Worst Cooks in America: Holiday House Call. In 2010, Tyler opened his restaurant, Wayfare Tavern, in San Francisco followed by the historic El Paseo in Mill Valley, March 2011. Tyler was awarded “Restaurateur of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2011 and earned a three star review from San Francisco restaurant critic, Michael Bauer. He has his own line of award-winning wine and an organic baby food company called Sprout in addition to a line of gourmet food products. Tyler has released multiple top-selling cookbooks, including Inside the Test Kitchen: 120 New Recipes, Perfected (Clarkson Potter), Tyler Florence Fresh (Clarkson Potter) and Tyler Makes Spaghetti (Harper Collins). Tyler lives in Mill Valley, California with his wife Tolan and their three children – Miles, Hayden, and Dorothy.

JOEL DAVID MOORE | Director (Youth In Oregon at #NVFF16)

_mg_6419-1With over fifteen years in the entertainment industry, Joel David Moore, who hails from Oregon, has worked diligently to become an accomplished multi-hyphenate actor, director and writer in both film and television. Moore has appeared in nearly a dozen television shows, including: LAX, CSI, The Guardian, Strong Medicine, Six Feet Under, Angel, Providence, Boomtown, Boston Public, House, Forever and as Colin Fisher, a graduate student on Bones.  Moore’s first major film role was in 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, though he is also known for his supporting role in James Cameron‘s Avatar (2009). Moore starred alongside Katy Perry in her music video for “Waking Up in Vegas“. He makes a cameo appearance in the “Beat It” cover video from Fall Out Boy. He co-starred with Katharine McPhee playing her love interest in her music video “It’s Not Christmas Without You” for her Christmas album Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You. NVFF audiences will remember Joel from his work opposite fellow NVFF alum Madeline Zima in the film Stuck that screened at the festival in 2013.
