Texas native MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men. A chance meeting in Austin with casting director and producer Don Phillips led him to director Richard Linklater, who launched the actor’s career in the cult classic Dazed and Confused. Since then, he has appeared in over 40 feature films that have grossed over $1 billion; and has become a producer, director, and philanthropist – all the while sticking to his Texas roots and “jk livin” philosophy.

You may know that 2014 was a game-changing year for McConaughey, for his riveting portrayal of Ron Woodruff in Dallas Buyers Club. Of which, McConaughey lost an astounding thirty pounds and received an Academy Award®, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award.  You may also know he made the move to TV starring alongside Woody Harrelson in the HBO dramatic series, the wildly evocative and popular True Detective. But did you know…

Matthew wanted to be a criminal defense attorney.

While attending the University of Texas at Austin, McConaughey wanted to eventually go onto law school, becoming a criminal defense attorney. Things changed, McConaughey ended up majoring in Communications for film, radio and television instead, which lead him to snagging his iconic role of “David Wooderson” in Dazed and Confused right after college. But, perhaps, he still thinks about becoming a criminal defense attorney? McConaughey has ironically played one twice—in 1996 for the film A Time to Kill and then again in 2011 for The Lincoln Lawyer (video clip above). From those performances alone, we think McConaughey would have been a fantastic lawyer!

  Matthew is a sexy man.

Okay, okay, okay this might be obvious! But it’s kind of official, McConaughey was People Magazine‘s 2005 Sexiest Man Alive—and ever since, fans have been advocating for him to make a repeat appearance. We’d have to agree!

  Matthew plays the bongos.

McConaughey has always gravitated toward live music, and he simply loves to play the bongos. One of his favorite bands is The Cult and back in 2012 McConaughey went onstage, playing the bongos with them for two songs (check-out around the 1:17 mark in the clip above)!

  Matthew smells like a man.

McConaughey has said in a few interviews that he doesn’t wear cologne or deodorant. We’re silently swooning over here! We imagined McConaughey smells like wood chips, faded campfires and fresh cotton with a hint of leather. Because that reminds us of Texas and his charming southern twang; put that into a candle and it would be a best seller.

Matthew’s childhood hero is Evel Knievel.

McConaughey has said that he would like to star in a movie based on Knievel’s life. We’re all for that! We remember when McConaughey rode a motorcycle in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days—one of the best parts of the film.

Matthew has a fear of revolving doors.

Not only does McConaughey not use revolving doors, but he gets very uncomfortable just being near them. He also doesn’t like the feeling of driving through tunnels either because of the blindspots and the fear of the unknown.

 Just Keep Livin!

McConaughey’s life mantra is “Just Keep Livin”. He and his wife, Camila, even founded a non-profit organization called Just Keep Livin which is “…dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future.”  More info on this wonderful foundation here.

Matthew will be in Napa Valley next week!
